Meet the team
Pony Tales has a great group of ponies waiting to make sure you have the best equestrian experience. No matter your age or experience we have the right pony for you.
SMALL PONY TEAM
Steinway is the longest serving member of the Pony Tales team.
He is a 17 year old Timor X, standing at 10hh.
Steinway is the best teacher for our smallest riders, patient & kind but still fun. He was the first pony for many of the riders now out competing.
He has represented Pony Tales out & about in various equestrian competitions including the Youth Dressage Festival in Taupo, multiple pleasure pony champion titles & show jumping.
Amenadiel is a strawberry roan, Welsh Section A pony.
He has been at Pony Tales for 3 years and started his ridden career here. Known for his super cuddly nature and ability to give the best kisses.
Amenadiel is a super kind pony who looks after his riders and is loved by all.
He has represented Pony Tales at our local Pony Club end of season gymkhana winning his age group section.
Spanner is a 12.2hh, bay Welsh X pony. He joined Pony Tales in 2022.
Spanner is unmistakable in the paddock as his white face markings are in the shape of a spanner.
He is a great asset to the riding school as he is kind & capable, with 3 great paces and a cute jump.
Spanner loves people and attention and is possibly the noisiest member of the herd, it is cute when he calls out to you in the paddock when you go to catch him though.
Vini, or Montello Moonstruck as he is formally known, is the Daddy of the herd.
He is now a valued member of the Pony Tales team but in a former life he became the Dad of several of our other ponies - Ace, Lachey, Monty & Morpheus.
Vini has only been at Pony Tales since 2025 but is already a firm favourite. He is first to the gate, watches lesson he isn’t in over the arena fence & loves people. We are grateful to his lovely owner, Lisa, for allowing him to be part of our team.
Buster.
This is a picture of him as a baby - what a cute guy! He is now all grown up and making a name for himself as the go-to guy for out bigger small riders.
Buster is also known as Onika Double D and is a Welsh Section C pony.
Buster (as his name suggests) is the boss of the small pony paddock and ponies & riders alike love his business like attitude. He still loves a cuddle though & is a thoroughly sweet boy.
Medium PONY TEAM
Sonny is a 13.2hh Welsh x pony.
Debate is still raging over his colour - is he brown or is he Chocolate dun? Who cares? What we do know is that he is a delight.
Sonny is a super caring, quiet and kind pony. His worst fault is that he can sometimes be a bit lazy but is easily persuaded to go.
Sonny loves nothing more than to go on a trek, especially to the river - which, according to him, is delicious.
Lachey
AKA Montello Lachinvar (or Lickey Lachey or Mr Floofy Ears to his friends)
Lachey is one if the newest members of the team. He is the son of Vini and grandson of Milo, so he has the breeding to make him the best kids pony.
Lachey is a cheeky wee fella but wonderful to ride and is proving to be a big hit in the riding school.
Romeo is a 14.1hh, ¾ Gypsy Cob by Gallifrey’s Captain Jack.
Romeo is an old soul in a young body. If you saw him you would swear he was an old guy but he is actually 6 years old.
He is super reliable in the riding school and has lovely paces (very floaty for a chunky boy). He has plenty of hair and, unfortunately for us, is a mud magnet.
Romeo is a go-to guy for almost anyone - a ‘trust him with your Granny’ type.
Milo AKA Galaxy Special Edition.
Milo is the Grandaddy - he is Dad to Vini and Grandad to Lachey, Monty, Ace & Morpheus. He is also full brother to Po who is still at Pony Tales but owned by Maddy.
Milo has found his perfect job at Pony Tales and has become a very quick hit with all our riders. He has the smoothest paces and most wonderful jump. In addition he is a quiet guy who loves a cuddle.
We are grateful to Sarah is owner & breeder for allowing him to join the team.
Smokey (AKA Gunsmoke)
What would we do without him? A absolute stalwart of the riding school, Smokey is the main man.
He is a jack of all trades & adjusts to his rider - he can be the slowest, most gentle guy for our beginners and a fun, exciting ride for our more advanced riders.
Smokey has been out & about competing at gymkhanas and loves to go out trekking. He is a 14.2hh, buckskin Northland bush pony.
Horse TEAM
Biscuit
Biccie is the bomb! He joined Pony Tales in January 2024 and is a 6 year old Urewera bush horse.
He is the most laid-back guy but when he gets going is rather impressive in all ways. He has lovely paces, is workmanlike and can work in a frame like a fancy pants.
Biscuit loves living in the river paddock with the big herd & is adept at hiding himself in the bushes.
Thorn (AKA Destiny’s Dreamcatcher)
Thorn is a 15.2hh Clydie X pinto gelding. He came to Pony Tales as a weanling and has grown up on the hill.
He is at the start of his ridden career but is proving to be a kind, quiet boy who loves his job. He has beautiful paces.
He is an inquisitive guy and loves to be fussed over and groomed. We look forward to a long and happy career with Thorn.
Knight
Knight is a 15hh Urewera bush horse. He arrived at Pony Tales with his buddy Biscuit.
He is a quiet, kind boy who is a forward but kind ride and who loves to jump & trek.
Knight has been out to shows & done some X country training but his super power is beach riding. He just loves to go out into the sea and is fearless - a true waterhorse.
Rata Mill Claudius
Claud is a magnificent grey, 16.1hh, shire x anglo gelding. He has been at Pony Tales since 2024 and started his ridden life with us.
He is a beautiful gentle soul who loves people and doing his job. He has a lovely jump and enjoys trekking.
Claud has been out to a couple of X country practise days & loves going out & about.
